Where I Find the Soul of a City

by Jan Schroder

I’m working through my travel lists. I still have four continents to go, but only three states remain until I’ve visited all 50.

I visit dozens of U.S. cities each year. Between meetings, I look for early 20th-century neighborhoods close to downtowns to get a sense of each city. I see parents meeting school buses,  kids playing basketball and riding bicycles, and neatly manicured yards. Irvington in Portland, Oregon; Dilworth in Charlotte, North Carolina; and Hyde Park in Tampa, Florida come to mind.

Now there’s a list of 25 Cities with Oldest Houses that reminds me I’ve got miles to go.
