Best Sandwiches on the Planet: Pork Chop Sandwich

by Chris Butsch

During a break in my son’s 1990s soccer tournament in Mt. Airy, North Carolina, I drove to the Snappy Lunch, opened in 1923 and made famous by the 1960s sitcom, The Andy Griffith Show.

Everyone suggested the pork chop sandwich. Though it sounded like it might be chewy, it was tender, juicy, warm and scrumptious – and messy. The chops had been pounded, marinated, fried and dressed with mustard, chili, onion, coleslaw and tomato. I almost ordered a second.

Then I checked into Mayberry Motor Inn, parked next to Barney Fife’s squad car and slept next door to Aunt Bee’s boudoir.
