In 1945, the Beetle nearly went extinct. An Allied bomb crashed through the roof of the Wolfsburg factory, but didn’t explode. A year later, Britain needed cars, Germans needed jobs, so they spooled up the assembly line.
Seventy-three years and 22 million cars later, the most iconic car in history is finally “retiring.” The Final Edition offers a unique Campanella Yellow trim and will surely fetch a nice price at Christie’s later this century.
I say “retiring” because VW’s “people’s car” is simply too popular. They made more Harry Potter movies, and they’ll make more Beetles: electric this time.
